Charles J. Hart was an American football coach. He served as the second head football coach at Brigham Young University, coaching for three seasons from 1925 to 1927, and compiling a record of 6–12–2.
Hart lettered in football (3 years) and track (4 years) at Utah State Agricultural College between 1918 and 1922. He was an all-conference end in football in 1921, and won the conference championship in the 880-yard run in track in 1922.
In 1925 he came to BYU as assistant football coach. He helped direct the Cougars to their first winning season ever in 1929 (five wins, three losses). He also coached the track team (1926 to 1928).
He was made chairman of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at BYU in 1937. In 1945 he received his Ph.D. in Physical Education from New York University. Dr. Hart continued as chairman of the Men’s Physical Education Department until 1962. In addition to his academic and athletic service to the University, Dr. Hart served as director (12 years) and member (20 years) of the Games Committee for the BYU Invitational High School Track Meet. He directed the annual Timpanogos hike from 1929-1961. As a member of the BYU Athletic Council, Dr. Hart was instrumental in assuring that high standards were maintained in intercollegiate competition. He died at the age of 75 in 1971.
