After a Mormon mission in New York City, he was the starting tight end for the BYU Cougars, at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah through the 2006 football season. He was named to the CBS SportsLine.com All-America team in the tight end position following the 2006 season. He was also named first-team All-America by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, ESPN.com, College Football News, and Scout.com.

He grew up in Orem, Utah, and graduated from Orem High School in the class of 2001.

He is most known for his last second touchdown catch versus BYU's rival the University of Utah in 2006, in which he caught a touchdown pass from John Beck as time expired, giving BYU a 33-31 victory.
